In 2010, three musicians from the Spanish coast of Barcelona, joined in order to create a power trio formed by the drummer Santiago Arderiu , Ricard Rius in the bass the guitarist Victor Gil. Soon after they recruit Gerard Marrugat (Guitar - lead vocals) and Guillem Laborda in the keyboards, so with the lineup complete, they took the name of ILVCIA and started their musical career.After gaining a respectable fanbase in their native Spain, the band started to work in their debut album, a hard and exhaustive job being that they self produced, recorded and edited "In the Nature of Reason" which saw the light in 2013.Even when the band members claim that their main influences are 70's icons YES, KING CRIMSON & RUSH, there's much more in their music, because they blended their natural Symphonic atmosphere with the delicacy of flamenco plus a hint of Post Rock that darkens even more their already haunting sound.When ILVCIA was suggested to our team, we had serious doubts, being that their style is incredibly eclectic, but the Symphonic essence is there, but complemented with other genres that make the fusion of sounds richer.Excellent addition for fans ready to accept that Symphonic Prog evolved since the 70's.

"This is a first time effort for a Spanish band that formed in 2010 and it’s a pretty home-grown affair. It’s clear these guys have a love of the classic symphonic styled progressive rock of the seventies and perhaps even the eighties as it’s reflected in their musical approach. The Barcelona based group Ilvcia consists of Santiago Arderiu (drums, percussion), Ricard Rius (bass, backing vocals), Víctor Gil (guitar), Gerard Marrugat (guitar, vocals) and Guillem Laborda (keyboards). Their CD is entitled In the Nature of Reason. In the Nature of Reason is a speedy 39-minutes of music featuring six compositions, three of which, Bagdad I, II, & III are themed as one longer piece. While it’s not overly complex, the music features all the hallmarks of classic seventies prog with a healthy dose of eighties styles instrumentation, especially in the keyboard department. The band manages to inject a bit of Spanish and Middle Eastern cultural influences in their compositions as well. It’s subtle but you certainly get the feeling you are listening to a European band. The first track “The Safe” [12:07] is the longest and features a return to melodic theme over the presentation of many different musical segments. There’s even time for some short guitar solo segments although Ilvcia aren’t the type of band to shine a spotlight on individual performance for very long rather it’s about the collective performance. As you might expect these tunes start, stop, change time and tempo and inject some non-rock musical influences. There’s even a hint of psychedelia in places. Where the whole musical effort tends to suffer is in the production; it sounds very much like a home produced affair and while a band like IQ might have gotten away with it in 1983, I’m not sure prog fans will be as forgiving in 2013. I always applaud a band who takes their craft to completion. It takes a lot of dedication and drive to be in a band and produce music. As a first time effort In the Nature of Reason has a lot going for it in terms of compositional style. Ilvcia are very creative in their prog approach and like any new band deserve to be heard. I’d suggest setting aside any misgivings you might have about the weak production sound and listen for the band’s creativity that’s where I think you’ll find much to appreciate.
