(ProgJazzRock) Daevid Allen - Planet Gong & New York Gong (1978-1979), FLAC (tracks)

This is a Japanese CD release from 1989 of Daevid Allen's two albums -- New York Gong's About Time and two-thirds of Planet Gong's Floating Anarchy Live 1977. (Sadly, the last track from the vinyl Floating Anarchy, the 15 minute "Allez Ali Baba Blacksheep Have You Any Bullshit: Mama Maya Mantram" was left off of this CD due to time constraints.) This disc is by far the best sounding digital version of these albums.

I've always felt that the New York Gong album was one of Daevid Allen's finest records: flipped out No Wave punk-funk, utilizing the members of Material (Bill L aswell, Fred Maher, etc.) and future Shockabilly/Bongwater stalwart (Mark) Kramer. Their first recording gig, in fact, thanks to Mr. Allen. There's also a strikingly memorable performance from the late Gary Windo (Robert Wyatt/The Carla Bley Band).

There are no laid back spacey passages here; no cosmic whimsy in sight. It's all 1979 New York nervous energy, paranoia and tension, along with what may be the best set of lyrics Allen ever wrote. Why this album always seems to get the short shrift is a mystery to me, but then I've always thought that the Radio Gnome Trilogy stuff was the least vital of Allen's work. Crazy me.

Floating Anarchy was the result of Daevid and Gilli's amalgamation with Here & Now -- a stripped-down festival punk band. All live recordings, bar the classic studio-recorded single, "Opium for the People." It's a real shame that the long, last track is missing from this CD, though. (Does anyone have the full version to upload?)

The commonly available Decal/Charly About Time CD sounds like complete sludge compared to this disc. (I haven't heard any of the bazillion Floating Anarchy CD reissues, so I can't really comment there.) I found this one in a used bin for $3 in the mid-1990s. It appears to predate all other CD releases (and apparently didn't stay in print in Japan for very long), but it does indeed sound infinitely better than the European discs.
