Roxy Music is the debut album by art rock band Roxy Music, released in June 1972. It was generally well-received by contemporary critics and made #10 in the UK charts.
Style and themes The opening track, “Re-Make/Re-Model”, has been labelled a post-modernist pastiche, featuring solos by each member of the band echoing various touchstones of Western music, including The Beatles’ “Day Tripper”, Duane Eddy’s version of “Peter Gunn” and Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries”; the esoteric chorus “CPL 593H” was supposedly the license number of a car, spotted by Bryan Ferry, driven by a beautiful woman. Eno produced some self-styled ‘lunacy’ when Ferry asked him for a sound “like the moon” for the track “Ladytron”. “If There Is Something” was covered by David Bowie’s Tin Machine, and was later featured, quite extensively, almost as a central figure, in the British film Flashbacks of a Fool.A number of songs were thematically linked to movies. “2HB”, with its punning title, was Ferry’s tribute to Humphrey Bogart and quoted the line “Here’s looking at you, kid” made famous by the film Casablanca (1942); “Chance Meeting” was inspired by David Lean’s Brief Encounter (1945). “The Bob” took its title from Battle of Britain (1968) and included a passage simulating the sound of gunfire. Discussing the music, Andy Mackay later said “we certainly didn’t invent eclecticism but we did say and prove that rock ‘n’ roll could accommodate – well, anything really”.
.
Production The band had been rehearsing and re-working the songs for a couple of months before they finally found a recording place, after which the entire album was recorded in the space of a single week. This was necessary because there was no record deal as yet, and their managers at EG were financing the sessions themselves. The album was produced by King Crimson’s lyricist, Peter Sinfield, who had recently left that band. In May 1972, a few weeks after the recording sessions, a contract was signed with Island Records and in June the album was released. The band’s penchant for glamour was showcased both in the lyrics and in the 1950-style album cover, with photography, hair dressing and art work credits detailed on the sleeve. Karl Stoecker photographed the cover image featuring model Kari-Ann Muller, who later married Chris Jagger, brother of Mick Jagger. The album was dedicated to Susie, a drummer who auditioned for Roxy Music in the early days.
Packaging Roxy Music, particularly the album’s LP incarnation, has been released in different packages over the years. The album’s original cover, as issued in 1972 by Island Records (catalog no. ILPS 9200), featured a gatefold sleeve picturing the band (including original bassist Graham Simpson) in stage attire designed by Antony Price, and these issues did not include “Virginia Plain.” The album’s original U.S. release, in late 1972 on Warner Bros. Records’ Reprise subsidiary (catalog no. MS 2114), included “Virginia Plain,” which had since been issued as a single in the UK. The original U.S. release also featured a gatefold sleeve, but replaced Simpson’s photo with that of Rik Kenton, who played bass on “Virginia Plain” following Simpson’s departure from the group.
U.S. distribution of Roxy Music was transferred from Reprise to their affiliated company Atco Records in 1976, and back to Reprise in the mid-1980s. LP editions of the album pressed in these timeframes were without the gatefold sleeve and band photographs, instead providing liner notes on the rear album cover.
Singles The original LP release did not contain any singles. In July 1972, a few weeks after the contract was signed, Roxy Music recorded two more songs, “Virginia Plain” and “The Numberer”, that were released as a single. It peaked at #4 in the UK charts and helped push sales of the album, which itself went to #10. In most later re-pressings of the album, including CD versions, the song “Virginia Plain” has been included.
In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #31 in its list of “40 Cosmic Rock Albums”. Ferry was quoted around the time of their 3rd album, “Stranded” that he did not like the odd production of the first LP, and was re-recording many of the tracks.

This is an older rip rescued from the Ghost Town
For Your Pleasure is a 1973 album by the British glam and art rock group Roxy Music, released by Island Records. The band’s second album, it was also their last to feature synthesizer and sound specialist Brian Eno, who would later gain acclaim as a solo artist and producer.
Production
The group was able to spend more studio time on this album than on their debut, combining strong song material by Bryan Ferry with more elaborate production treatments. For example, the song “In Every Dream Home a Heartache” (Ferry’s sinister ode to a blow-up doll) fades out in its closing section, only to fade back in again with all the instruments subjected to a pronounced phasing treatment. The title track fades out in an elaborate blend of tape loop effects. Eno remarked that the eerie “Bogus Man” displayed similarities with contemporary material by the krautrock group Can.
Of the more upbeat numbers on the album, “Do the Strand” and “Editions of You” were both based around insistent rhythms in the tradition of the band’s first single “Virginia Plain”. “Do the Strand” has been called the archetypal Roxy Music anthem, whilst “Editions of You” was notable for a series of ear-catching solos by Andy Mackay (sax), Eno (VCS3), and Phil Manzanera (guitar).Brian Eno is very present in the final song from the album, “For Your Pleasure” making it unlike any other song. The song ends with the voice of Judi Dench saying “You don’t ask. You don’t ask why” amid tapes of the opening vocals (‘Well, how are you?’) from “Chance Meeting” from the first Roxy Music album. A live recording of the song has been used in 1975 as a B-side to “Both Ends Burning”.
Promotion
As with the debut Roxy Music album, no UK singles were lifted from For Your Pleasure upon its initial release. A single-only release, “Pyjamarama” b/w “The Pride and the Pain”, was issued in Britain, making #10. “Do the Strand” b/w “Editions of You” was released as a single in the US and Europe; it was finally issued as a UK single in 1978 to promote Roxy’s Greatest Hits album, released in December the previous year. The cover photo, taken by Karl Stoecker, featured Bryan Ferry’s girlfriend at the time, singer and model Amanda Lear. Original pressings of the album (by Island Records in the UK, and Warner Bros. Records in the U.S.), featured a gatefold sleeve picturing all five band members wearing their Antony Price-designed stage costumes and posing with guitars.
Reception
For Your Pleasure made #4 in UK charts in 1973. In 2000 Q magazine placed it at number 33 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2003, the album was ranked number 394 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It was one of four by the group that made the list (Country Life, Siren and Avalon being the others). It placed at 87 on Pitchfork Media’s Top 100 Albums of the 1970s. The citation notes that Morrissey told the British press that “he could ‘only think of one truly great British album’: For Your Pleasure.”

Stranded is the third album by art rock band Roxy Music, and was released late 1973, reaching number one on the UK album charts. The cover features Ferry’s then girlfriend and 1973 Playmate of the Year, Marilyn Cole. It was the first Roxy Music album on which Bryan Ferry was not the sole songwriter as multi-instrumentalist Andy Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzanera also contributed to the album. Though it was also the first without Brian Eno, who had left the group after For Your Pleasure, he nonetheless later rated it as Roxy Music’s finest record.
The track “Street Life” was released as a single and reached number 9 on the UK charts. . Track listing All songs written by Bryan Ferry except as noted . Country Life is the fourth album by British rock band Roxy Music, released in 1974 and reaching #3 in the UK charts. It also made #37 in the United States, their first record to crack the Top 40 there. The album is considered by many critics to be among the band’s most sophisticated and consistent. Band leader Bryan Ferry took the album’s title from the British rural lifestyle magazine Country Life.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 387 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. It was one of four Roxy Music albums that made the list (For Your Pleasure, Siren and Avalon being the others).
Style and themes
The opening track, “The Thrill of it All”, was an up-tempo rocker that further developed the style of songs like “Virginia Plain” (1972) and “Do the Strand” (1973); it included a quote from Dorothy Parker’s poem “Resume”: “You might as well live”. Edwin Jobson’s violin dominated the heavily-flanged production of “Out of the Blue”, which became a live favourite. Esoteric musical influences were betrayed by the German oom-pah band passages in “Bitter-Sweet”, the Elizabethan flavour of “Triptych” and the lighthearted, boogie-blues, Southern rock edge to “If It Takes All Night”.
“Casanova” was singled out for praise by a number of critics as a more cynical and hard-rocking number than the usual Roxy Music fare. Like the earlier “In Every Dream Home a Heartache” (1973), it was seen as a critique of the hollowness of the contemporary jet set, and contained further instances of Bryan Ferry’s idiosyncratic word association (“Now you’re nothing but / Second hand in glove / With second rate”). A re-recorded version, more mellow than the original, appeared on Ferry’s 1976 solo album Let’s Stick Together.
The final track, “Prairie Rose”, was an ode to Texas and one of its daughters, Jerry Hall, Ferry’s new girlfriend, who was soon to appear on the cover of Roxy Music’s fifth album, Siren (1975), and later in the video to Ferry’s hit single “Let’s Stick Together”.
Country Life included Roxy Music’s fourth single, “All I Want Is You” b/w “Your Application’s Failed”, which reached #12 in the UK charts. An edited version of “The Thrill of It All”, with the same B-side, was released in the United States. The album was released on Atco Records, a division of Atlantic Records. Cover art
Shot by Eric Boman, the cover features two scantily-clad models, Constanze Karoli (reportedly either the sister or the cousin of Can’s Michael Karoli) and Eveline Grunwald. Bryan Ferry met them in Portugal and persuaded them to do the photo shoot as well as to help him with the words to the song “Bitter-Sweet”. Although not credited for their photos they are credited on the lyric sheet for their German translation work.
The cover image was considered controversial in some countries such as the United States, Spain, and the Netherlands, where it was censored for release. As a result, a later American LP release of Country Life (available during the years 1975-80) featured a different cover shot. Instead of Karoli and Grunwald posed in front of some trees, the reissue used a photo from the album’s back cover that featured only the trees. Author Michael Ochs has described the result as the “most complete cover-up in rock history”.
The cover art has been mimicked by:
Electronic band Ladytron with the cover of the mix compilation Softcore Jukebox. Electro girl band Robots in Disguise with the cover for their 2002 singles “Boys” featuring comedian Noel Fielding and musician Chris Corner. Indie rock band Sweet Apple for the cover of their 2010 album Love & Desperation. American baseball/music-themed magazine ChinMusic!, featuring Parisian singer Cecilia Meneau (No-Talents, Operation S, Cecilia et Ses Ennuis).

No DeNoise was used on this rip. All de-clicking software used in full manual mode to preserve musical transients. No music was harmed in the making of this vinyl rip. No silence been removed, please burn gapless to match original track layout.
Note: Track 1 "The Thrill of It All" has random clicks that are part of the original master. I found them annoying and sounding very much like vinyl defect clicks. I have also provided an alternate version with those annoying clicks removed. See "01 - The Thrill of It All_no clicks.flac" These new Roxy Music reissues courtesy of Rohitbhalla. Roxy Music – Avalon (1982) 24-bit/96kHz vinyl transfer | FLAC
Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums.
Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry’s elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop. Ferry was never this romantic or seductive, either with Roxy or as a solo artist, and Avalon shimmers with elegance in both its music and its lyrics. “More Than This,” “Take a Chance with Me,” “While My Heart Is Still Beating,” and the title track are immaculately crafted and subtle songs, where the shifting synthesizers and murmured vocals gradually reveal the melodies. It’s a rich, textured album and a graceful way to end the band’s career. – allmusic.com

Then again, the pristine production on this record would probably sound good if it were pressed on an old Frisbee. No ClickRepair necessary here – the few stray clicks were tracked down by deep listening and manual spot cleaning in Adobe Audition. Enjoy!
