Now here's a band whose name fits - heavenly stoner doom metal that reaches realms of Sabbath-y paradise, thus far untouched by the band's Western world counterparts. You see, Eternal Elysium hails from Japan, not a country most people view as synonymous with obese, oppressive guitar riffing, churning leads that reek of dirty blues, or stinging, emotive, wailing vocals. Spiritualized D is simply a masterpiece of doom; why it has gotten little attention just baffles the mind. Every single track is traditional, in your face, '70s doom, dripping with oblique Sabbath, St. Vitus, Trouble, and Fu Manchu attributes. Take Sabbath's Master of Reality, Penance's Parallel Corners, Cathedral's Soul Sacrifice, Fu Manchu's In Search Of..., and any early Trouble release, fuse them together with Electric Wizard, and serve blisteringly hot. Most bands lack Elysium's musical audacity, unadulterated heaviness, and ability to capture true rock spirit, as they are usually too busy trying to look or sound cool -- Electric Wizard being the only worthy exception. This is a serious musical purging, folks. Even genre leaders like Cathedral need to take a few pointers from the dynamic sonic wall built on the Paranoid-like blues of "Trick or Steal" or the sluggish charm of "Floating Downer." The vocals are faint and familiar on opener "W.T.G.B," but somehow impossible to place, yet they are unimportant in the sonic war zone faced on Spiritualized D. The punkish "Stone Wedge" could have been snatched off an old Fu Manchu or C.O.C. record, while "Easygoin'" stirs up memories of "Fairies Wear Boots," minus Ozzy, of course. Iron Maiden's classic "Innocent Exile" is fuzzed-up and tuned down in a brave, surprisingly competent rendition on the album. Yet, it is the closing pair of instrumentals that push the musical boundaries of the doom genre to new heights. First is a bastard child of England's two prominent '90s doom bands, "Faithful '99," which sounds like Cathedral performing a punishing rocker co-penned by My Dying Bride circa Turn Loose the Swans or Angel and the Dark River. It's virtually unexplainable to deprived ears, as is the haunting, unnamed final track. A quiet, 14-minute piece of traditional Japanese composing, the song recalls the nation's - and possibly the world's, were it not for his unfortunate obscurity - greatest composer, Toru Takemitsu. Takemitsu gained recognition in the '60s, '70s, and '80s as an abstract film composer, who scored for the likes of Akira Kurosawa and several others famous filmmakers. Combining Western classical music with traditional Japanese flutes, percussion instruments, and other strange items, he created an ambient, eerie soundscape, thus far unmatched in classical recording's history (check him out if you are looking for dark classical music). This final hidden track is a brilliant tribute to a true genius of 20th century music, showing a mature, vulnerable, and musically introspective side to the band, which was kept hidden throughout the course of the first nine songs. What a breathtakingly beautiful end to an amazingly punishing masterpiece of an album. (c) Jason Hundey

One of many Japanese bands proffering slightly "bent" interpretations of Western hard garage and/or psychedelic rock forms, Eternal Elysium has been peddling its trade longer than most. Yet, amazingly, despite nearly a decade of activity, 2002's Share is only the trio's third album proper, a fact explained away by volatile band membership and screwy record contracts. A seven-year gap followed the band's 1993 debut, so that when they finally did score a reliable contract from Meteor City, Eternal Elysium spent much of 2000's excellent Spiritualized D opus working their way through the previous years' huge backlog of quality music. Not surprisingly, turning right around and trying to come up with another album of brand-new material only two years later resulted in a far less road-tested or fool-proof collection of songs, marking Share as a mixed bag, to say the least. Traversing a wide range of psychedelically obsessed doom metal and hard rock, tracks on Share usually fall into one of two categories: short, punchy rockers or long, overdrawn epics (i.e., 8-9 minutes). All this would be fine and good were these truly accomplished compositions, but only a handful of cuts reconcile the band's ever-imaginative songwriting with any decent hooks - chief among these the driving "Movements and Vibes" and the gargantuan "Waiting for the Sun." But, for the most part, though they evince frequent flashes of inspired lunacy and freaky-cool asides, Eternal Elysium's mad-hatter aural soup rarely condenses into a truly hearty meal. Put bluntly, there's a fine line between free-form and unfocused, and the band's non-linear arrangements and unexpected permutations tend to the latter on Share. (c) Eduardo Rivadavia

Well, Eternal Elysium really is pulling out some serious business with these 3 new cuts, I think that America rubbed off on Okazaki a bit. The three cuts that they do are nothing short of great. Browny Brownie is an 11 minute epic of heavy tuned down goodness, great leads and pounding rhythms. This song is worth the CD's purchase alone, and I am not kidding. Overprotected and Sunpower are shorter songs, but still a kick in the head as far as great tunes. Thick guitars that remind me of Acid King at times, and great production all the way through...you gotta have this if you are an EE fan for sure. Of The Spacistor is something I haven't ever heard before and is definitely a bit different than EE. This stuff reminds me of more Japanese sounding bands like The Bordoms or Ruins, busy riffs and very Asian sounding guitar sounds as far as choice of notes. This is a bit more hardcore and along the lines of Today is the Day or Dazzling Killmen. Full of energy and full of weird hard soul...I am certainly glad that I have gotten this chance to check them out, and goes nicely with the EE stuff as far as being a bit different and offsetting the sound. Again, out of the two bands, EE is king on this CD in my eyes; and a lot of people that liked Share will see that this is a step in a more matured direction for them. They are Sabbath and Maiden influenced all the same, but Okazaki and company are really starting to carve their own s t y l e, and when I hear this I know who it is straight away without any question of a doubt. Get this one for sure if you own the other two EE albums. (c) /www.stonerrock.com/

Yukito Okazaki - vocals, guitars Tana Haugo - bass, vocals Antonio Ishikawa - drums Guest performances by: Schneebi, Senpo, Gan-chan, Kengo Recorded at Donner & Blitzen, Arcadia, CA USA February 2005. Eternal Elysium. A legendary outfit from the Japanese Doom/Stoner-Metal world. The band formed back in 1991 and since then lots of changes have happened in the band’s form. Eternal Elysium must be the only band I know that has a totally different line up in all its releases, except of course the founder and heart of the band Yukito Okazaki. Eternal Elysium’s first full length “Faithful” came out in 1996 and I think it’s almost impossible to find. The next two albums “Spiritualized D” and “Share” that followed were released in Meteorcity Records and obviously are easier to find. “Searching High & Low” is the band’s fourth full length and please allow me to be highly excited with it. The album contains 8 tracks and some of them will certainly amaze you. “Reefer Happiness” is the opener and beware! It might have passed quite a while since the last time you heard such riffage. We’re talking about one of the coolest riffs I have heard this year! The rhythm section is as thick as a fucking wall of bricks. “Not So Far” that follows starts as a true Doom anthem, ultra slow, almost catatonic, enriched with sorrowful pain spited out of Yukito’s mouth. All these until the middle of the track, where the unexpected happens. The track transforms on a thunderous groove. “Twilight High” continues in the same hypnotic line of “Not So Far” with riffs and vocals based in traditional Doom, low-geared guitars, and a finish with a rolling wah-wah freak out riff that kicks ass. “No Isolation” is the second track of the album with infectious dinosauric riffs, those fat guitar sounds will remind to lots of you the heavy tones of the Maryland scene. “Before The Morning Comes” has something that is unique, at the start the track has a happy feeling diffused all around that almost makes the listener wanna dance! (Who said that you have to be depressed to play in a doom band?). “Green Song” is the last song of the album and the longest. Almost 17 minutes and I have to say it takes some patience to get into it, but when you do, you’ll find yourselves in the middle of a fluid track that flows perfectly. It took the band 3 years to release “Searching Low & High”, but with this one they are forcing us to thank the gods of heavy rock for their existence. (c) /www.monolith.gr/

This split-CD has been released through the Japanese label Diwphalanx in 2007 so that maybe not everyone owns a copy. Eternal Elysium continue their path of doom-driven heavy psych rock, so that everyone who still wishes that they return to their roots will maybe be disappointed about this four songs. Shadowed Flower' is charged with doomy metallic undertones and can remind the listener to their early epic doom metal days, while the other tracks are in the vein of their last full-length 'Searching High & Low'. Needless to say that this is top-notch stuff and especially the vocals of guitarist Yukito Okazaki add this special eastern vibe to their songs. This band carry the inheritance of Flower Travellin Band in their blood and they handle it very careful. Black Cobra hews a little close to recent High on Fire songs, down to the buried-deep vocals and the meandering interludes (there’s no need for the solo guitar instrumental “Thanos” on a twenty-five-minute EP), but that’s really the only gripe here. The members of Black Cobra keep their tracks short, their riffs loose and their approach free of pretense, and the three perfectly recorded live videos included on the disc show that the band sounds every bit as massive on the road -- no surprise for a group that’s logged eleven U.S. and international tours in just more than a year. When the riff cyclones of closing track “Swords for Teeth” finally stop spinning, you’ll gladly let Black Cobra keep your ears. (c) /www.cosmiclava.com/

Eternal Elysium "Within The Triad" я прочувствовал все прелести лёгкого трипа без негативных последствий. One of my favorite bands ever is the Japanese Stoner/Psychedelic Doom masters "Eternal Elysium" and this has been a long wait for this, their fifth full length album "Within The Triad".From the opening track "Agent of Doom" you are instantly sucked into their Psychedelic Doom vacuum as the sound on this album is very very heavy but also so trippy in a Hawkwind - ish kind of way. This band have a uncanny ability to mix up sounds and influences from Sabbath,King Crimson,Black Widow,Hendrix to modern day exponents of everything from straight out Metal to Doom to Stoner to even grunge and make it work."Agent Of Doom" is one of their best tracks ever and you will be reaching for the repeat button time and again with this tune. The way the band can blend some slow and bluesy rhythms and crank them up with one hell of a heavy sounding Guitar tone is stunning. While there is a lot of heavy Guitar sounds in the world today, somehow the sound on here still remains somehow unique.Nothing quite sounds like it,the only way i can describe it is like a Doomed Up Version Of Hawkwind but that doesn't even do it justice.Every track on here is essential listening for lovers of Space Rock and Psychedelic Doom, check out the hypnotic quality of a track like "DPS" for a good example. The track is like a Psychedelic freight train pummeling your brain through 8 minutes of pure ear candy. The well seasoned Guitar work is better than ever, they seem to get even more polished with each release. There is also a distinctly need to experiment with styles on this album while remaining heavy at all costs, everything from African beats to Kraut rock is used to produce unbelievable results.Again another mind-altering release with no filler,i can't pick a favorite track but "Agent Of Doom" and "DPS" would have to come close.Yukito Okazaki has turned into a modern Guitar God and on this album he has taken another step up into Stoner Doom glory, the depth of his work is exceptional.I always thought "Spiritualized D" was their best album and this album is on par with that, maybe not better but just as good.On a personal note, this sucker cost me some $45 to order being a import only release at the time of this writing.I don't know if that has changed but it needs to because this band is sadly underrated and to a certain extent under-heard.Another killer release from the Japanese masters of killer Sabbathian Riffing. /www.doommantia.com/
