  ::      Marduk's Dark Endless was the first release of their now         ::
  ::      lengthy and well established career. Originally released in      ::
  ::      December of 1992 through No Fashion Records, the re-issued       ::
  ::      and re-mastered version contains a new intro track, as well      ::
  ::      as six bonus tracks.                                             ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  ::      Let's go back to 1992 when the Norwegians were establishing      ::
  ::      their stronghold of the new and uprising black metal scene.      ::
  ::      During this period of black metal, it was largely just           ::
  ::      blackened thrash or blackened death metal that made the          ::
  ::      majority of what metal bands were doing at this point. Then      ::
  ::      along came the Swedish band Marduk starting to try               ::
  ::      something different. The tracks on this album, such as           ::
  ::      "Dark Endless", "Within the Abyss", and "Holy Inquisition"       ::
  ::      weren't your standard black metal tracks of this era. In         ::
  ::      these tracks, certain sections the tempo are halved and          ::
  ::      infused with slow doomy riffs, creating an icy cold              ::
  ::      atmosphere and breaking boundaries in the thriving new           ::
  ::      scene.                                                           ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  ::      I think that perhaps this album was slightly ahead of its        ::
  ::      time. To me this album would still appeal to all the modern      ::
  ::      black metal fans. Perhaps that is why it has been re-            ::
  ::      issued. The re-mastering on this album was badly needed.         ::
  ::      The original recording had that half-volume sound that I         ::
  ::      think everyone finds annoying on their MP3 players. So they      ::
  ::      dealt with that giving the re-issue a much fuller sound yet      ::
  ::      still keeping the style of the early 90's recording. You         ::
  ::      have got to love the echoing drums on old recordings!            ::
  ::                                                                       ::
  ::      The intro is a minute of off key and unstructured piano          ::
  ::      playing, with a sinister squealing effect over top. It           ::
  ::      really sets in a dark melancholic feeling of discomfort.         ::
  ::      I'm going to be brutally honest; the six bonus tracks are a      ::
  ::      waste of time. They are demos and live tracks recorded           ::
  ::      before the original release of DARK ENDLESS in 1992. The         ::
  ::      quality of these recordings is so poor. It's like it was         ::
  ::      recorded on a cassette tape recorder, then the tape got          ::
  ::      chewed up and wound back on. That is the level of quality        ::
  ::      you'll find! However, these tracks may still be appealing        ::
  ::      to the "die hard" Marduk fan.                                    ::

  ::      Dark Endless is a justified re-release. The sound quality        ::
  ::      issues have been fixed, but if you're looking to pick up         ::
  ::      this album for the bonus tracks, you may be disappointed.        ::
  ::                                                                       ::

  ::      reissue released by GRAVEWISH.                                   ::
