Superstein entertains with her impressive vocals and adorable song choices but is also sure to charm the pants (and skirts) off audience members with her witty banter and magical ability to relate to audience members young and old. Recent appearances include Canadian Music Week, CTV news, Pender Harbour Jazz Fest and Vancouver International Jazz Fest. It’s no wonder they call her Super!
Super’s debut at the 2010 Vancouver International Jazz festival earned her a Galaxie Award nomination for emerging talent. Her performances continue to leave fans mesmerized with her take on the not-so-standard standards and her edgy renditions of contemporary tunes like Radiohead’s Karma Police bring the house down every time. With a sound that is both hauntigly familiar and compellingly new, Super guides the listener through a fantastical world of dimly lit speakeasies and lavish nightclubs. Super’s love of performance is evident as she playfully and candidly engages with the audience, making us fall in love with her just a little bit more each time. Her smile is contagious and her playfulness allows even the non-jazz enthusiast an all access pass.
It is a blend of musicianship and performance that sets her apart from her contemporaries. Hailing from Montreal, Super now calls Vancouver home and spins melodies that are rooted deeply in her experiences of these cities. Super’s soulful style combines a masterful blend of jazz, latin and blues sprinkled with hints of nostalgia from the early jazz era. The result? A sound reminiscent of yesteryear yet compellingly new and original.
Super continues to garner accolades and was recently featured on a Women in Jazz compilation CD. She has been showcased on the airwaves of international and Canadian radio stations, and was recently a special guest on CBC’s Hot Air. She has also been interviewed for a multitude of jazz publications and broadcasts.
In 2012, Super was invited to perform in the first ever jazz showcase at Canadian Music Week in Toronto and has completed 2 successful Canadian tours in both 2012 and 2013. She is the most recent recipient of a Virgin Radio/Music BC recording grant and is working towards her second record, slated to be released later in 2013.
Super has already had the pleasure of working with legends Nancy King, Jay Clayton and Kate Hammett-Vaughan as well as new generation jazz superstars Gretchen Parlato, Sara Gazarek and Sachal Vasandani. She has also performed with pianists Josh Rager, Sharon Minemoto and Jillian Lebeck, bassists Dave Watts, Adam Thomas and Nedra Wheeler as well as Bill Coon, Evan Arntzen and John Korsrud.
