This is The Girls from Bahia - Pardon my English (1967). The Girls from Bahia is the name used for Quarteto em Cy on their initiative to conquer USA audiences in the late 60's. This LP was recorded and released in the United States, featuring arrangements by Oscar Castro Neves and produced by Ray Gilbert and Aloysio de Oliveira. For the convenience of everybody, that nice Quarteto em Cy video with Marcos Valle at the Andy Williams Show is also being reposted bellow.

For my next radio show in July I'm working on collecting together as
many recordings by the Quarteto Em Cy I can get a hold of (from the
early 60s to the late 1970s) - and I had a hope of including their
Americanized bossa nova records recorded as The Girls From Bahia. I
think it'll be the perfect music for the heat of the summer.
The group was comprised of sisters named Cyva, Cybele, Cynara, and
Cylene. I got a hold of one lp called Pardon My English, but the other
has alluded me called !Revolucion con Brasilia! The Exciting New
Sounds of The Girls From Bahia. The LP comes up for auction every so
often but so far I've been outbid, so I thought I'd see if anyone has
this lp per chance.
They do songs like The Sunny Side of the Street, Road To Nowhere, The
Old Piano Rolls, The Day It Rained and Manhattan on !Revolucion con
Brasilia! and Makin' Whoopee, Tup-A-Tup Tears, Oh Susannah, Bye Bye
Blackbird, The Face I Love, Surfin' In Rio, and Useless Landscape on
Pardon My English - and I have to say the songs I've heard so far are
mighty cool (if anyone wants anything played from Pardon My English to
musica let me know - the rewrite of the brasilian tune and title track
from that lp and Bye Bye Blackbird are great). Also if anyone can help
me out with the Revolucion lp please let me know about that too.
Were there any other Americanized Bossa Nova acts from the mid-60s who
aren't remembered today?

A sublime album by this lovely Brazilian quartet of female singers – arguably their best album ever! The album features arrangements by Edu Lobo, Luiz Eca, and other baroque jazzy talents – perfectly suited to take the bossa harmony sound of the Quarteto Em Cy into more sophisticated territory during the 70s. Proof of that is the landmark track "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser", their amazing take on the Milton Nascimento classic – and other great tracks include "Quando O Carnaval Chegar", "Inclensa", "Cantoria", "Canto De Oba", and "Zanga, Zangada"

This is Quarteto em Cy - Antologia do Samba Cancao Volumes 1 & 2 (1975, 1976), both for Philips. These albums should definitively be released as a double LP, Quarteto em Cy makes a breathtaking rendition with meddley to several key Brazilian music figures, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Noel Rosa, Dorival Caymmi, Johnny Alf, Garoto among others. Quarteto em Cy has some kind of magic and their albums are always very successful at Loronix. I'm sure this one is not an exception.

Bossa nova meets a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound, creating something truly lush and intoxicating.
Beautiful harmonies play off elegant Spanish guitar and relaxed percussion.
These two releases really showcase the quartet's vocal talent, so if you haven't heard them, this will serve as a great introduction.

This is Quarteto em Cy – Querelas do Brasil (1978), which is probably the most “political flavored” album released by the girls, with several lyrics about Brazilian problems of that time. By the way, the album title is taken from one of those songs; Querelas do Brasil by Mauricio Tapajos and Aldir Blanc. Such as many Brazilian albums released in the 70’s, Querelas do Brazil features a constellation of Brazilian musicians, including Sivuca, Antonio Adolfo, Luizao, Neco, Copinha, Raul de Barros and many others.

This is Quarteto em Cy - Pontos de Luz (1982), featuring Cybele, Cyva , Cynara and Soninha, which is current Quarteto em Cy formation, unchanged since 1980. Pontos de Luz has a strong influence of Lincoln Olivetti arrangements, delivering a lot of synthesizers to back the girl’s voice. Anyway, it is a really unusual album by Quarteto em Cy and I hope Loronixers give feedback on it.

Another release by the best female vocal quartet of Brazil, Quarteto Em Cy. Sticking to the MPB style, all contemporary influences are put aside, and what the listener hears are acoustic sambas with the competent instrumental backing of expressive sessionmen. The album opens with Ary Barroso’s “Isto Aqui é O Que É,” representing the love for the Brazilian traditional samba, even if the old song has a new life through the re-harmonization and arrangements by female conductor Célia Vaz. Djavan’s “Serrado,” in a modern rendition with brasses, makes clear that the adhesion to MPB doesn’t imply nostalgia. Then it’s time for Bahian images: with special guest Gal Costa, they perform “Saudade da Bahia” and “São Salvador” from the master of the Bahian universe, Dorival Caymmi. Now listeners are in bossa times, with “Samba do Avião,” where the quartet is helped by Leo Gandelman’s sax in a very simple and conservative short solo. The old samba, with the delicate traditional regional accompaniment, is again remembered through one of Brazil’s best samba composers of all time, Noel Rosa: “Último Desejo,” with especial guest Zélia Duncan. With “O Mestre-sala Dos Mares” (song recorded by Elis Regina, among others) by João Bosco/Aldir Blanc, the impetuosity of the middle-class samba of the ’70s is celebrated, just to give room to the unmistakable accent of the compositions by Toquinho and Vinícius, in “Mais Um Adeus” (with a special performance by MPB-4). “Sampa” comes next, with the theme of “Ronda” recalled in the introduction, drawing attention to the connection between both songs: both are unofficial anthems for the city of São Paulo, for different generations. “A Noite do Meu Bem” is performed like a bolero in the truly fossa tradition, reinforcing the romanticism and the drama of its pre-bossa times with the performance of Maria Bethânia. The samba de roda is in two compositions by Ivonne Lara, “Alguém Me Avisou” and “Não Chora Meu Bem.” Fossa is once more remembered through the samba-canção of Lupicínio Rodrigues, “Nervos de Aço,” with the participation of Miúcha. The samba Paulista is represented by Adoniran Barbosa/Alocin’s “Samba do ‘Arnesto,’” but the traditional Carioca reference is again invoked, this time by Cartola’s fundamental “Alvorada” (with Hermínio Bello de Carvalho). The album closes on the high note of the modern samba of Paulinho da Viola, with the nostalgic “Foi Um Rio Que Passou Em Minha Vida” as the chosen vehicle. A strong album where the wonderful vocal quartet exercises their love for classical composers of Brazilian music in modern harmonies. – Alvaro Neder
