"Drowning Room started much like the way it ended. A conversation. Greg Nazak called Sean Mesler and asked him if he wanted to sing for the band he had with Karl Krebs. Sean went to their rehearsal space, which was Karl's parents garage and they wrote the song Pipes.
Even the band name came from a conversation. Karl and Sean were on the phone discussing potential names when Sean came across the Lament 7" entitled "Drowning Room". Everyone liked it so it stuck. Later it played a significant role in defining the band because like the name that couldn't be pinned any generic category, so did Drowning Room's musical out put. Not content with being the sludge band tuned to B flat, they constantly evolved their sound, playing with faster rhythms and adding more rock and roll and melody into their later work. The name fit them and how they approached music.
After releasing a successful demo, they released The Divinity Syndrome 7" with Trip Machine Laboratories. Selling out of the initial pressing of 1000 copies rather fast for a band that hadn't toured. When it came time for the first full-length recording, the wheels started to come off. Eager to keep the momentum they had been gaining, they hastily agreed to release their next record on an upstart label run by a local promoter. True Love Always was officially release May 30th 1997 and at their release show the band had sold 100 copies. Not too bad they thought. But the label had no clue how to distribute their record and to this day they have not sold the initial run of 1000 copies.
Not being deterred the band set out on an East Coast tour with Sum of All Fears from CT, which culminated at a show in FT. Lauderale's House of Blues with then rookies Shai Hulud.
Sean, Karl and Greg returned rejuvenated and ready to write. Shane Chikeles, the bands wunderkind, second drummer, had other plan's and left the band. The three quickly found a new drummer, Anthony Realbuto from CT's Eventide and wrote what they felt was their best work to date, the unofficially released Kill Them in the Classic Style demo which was intended for 7" release.
Shortly after recording Anthony left the band to return to Eventide. After a couple of false starts, and a desire to move away from screaming, fast paced hardcore, Greg and Sean decided it was time to call it a day and played their last shows as Drowning Room as a full time band. By the end of summer 1998, Drowning Room was done only to return periodically to play benefit shows for good friends that had passed away.
Drowning Room played what was to be their last show ever in January of 2009 when Sean decided to move to Los Angeles. And once again, after a conversation with Karl and Greg, Drowning Room will reunite once more in October 2012 under the best of circumstances. No grim reminders of lost friends or the finality of moving to another coast. They are doing it because then genuinely love playing heavy, fast music for people that enjoy it". (c)
