Doctor And The Crippens - Fired From The Circus
A timeless masterpiece of comically epic proportions. This is one of those punk rock albums that even though it's the same, somehow sounds completely different from everything else. With ridiculous songs such as "Ode to a Slug" and the second shortest song of all time, "A Controlled Experiment", to call it "wacky" would be an understatement - but it's obvious they are taking the music seriously, as it flops around frantically from avant garde fuzz-pop to furious blasts of hardcore and even D-beat that are somewhat surprising from that era in England. Rarely has a punk band had the ludicrous ambition to condense 50 different genres into a single LP, but it genuinely works out here. Combine this penchant for the strange with unearthly vocals that sound both melodic and abrasive simultaneously. Probably the only record in the world that sounds like Jerry's Kids, Void, My Bloody Valentine, old Joy Division and Electro Hippies during the same song. It's also probably the sole hardcore representative of British humor in any real sense. There's just nothing else as cool as this, except the band's other LP. Even that one is slightly less impressive, though the recording quality is vastly improved. Personally, I'm so used to shitty tapes that it actually sounds better to me now (many a time has been when a studio producer has stared dumbfounded at me when I say it sounds "too clean"), so it's not exactly a concern. After nearly a decade of listening to punk and hardcore, I'm frankly beginning to tire of all it's modern-era bullshit, but this record continues to surprise and amaze me every time I listen to it.
