The Hot Club of Cowtown formed in 1997 as a Hot Jazz/Western swing trio. The group consisted of Elana Fremerman (now known as Elana James) (vocals, violin), Whit Smith (vocals, guitar), and TC Cyran (vocals, upright bass), who was later replaced by Jake Erwin.
The Hot Club's first album, 1998's Swingin' Stampede was a collection of standards, fiddle tunes, and classic Western Swing songs, including two written by Bob Wills, a major influence on the band. Their 1999 follow-up album, Tall Tales, showcased the songwriting ability of Smith and James with many original songs, including "Darling You And I Are Through" by James, and "Emily" and "When I Lost You" by Smith, as well as more Western Swing standards by Bob Wills, Pee Wee King, and others. Further albums would continue the same formula of classic Western Swing and hot jazz, along with originals in the same style. Some of the best examples of these are the band's two most recent studio albums, Ghost Train (2002) and Wishful Thinking (2009).
The members of Hot Club of Cowtown went their separate ways in 2005, though they reunited for occasional shows in 2006-07, including the Fuji Rock Festival and a tour of Australia as Elana James & The Hot Club of Cowtown, in 2007. Whit Smith performed as Whit Smith's Hot Jazz Caravan, based out of Austin, Texas. Elana toured with Bob Dylan in 2005, the first dedicated female instrumentalist to be included in his touring band in over 30 years (Elana came to Dylan's attention when The Hot Club of Cowtown opened for him and Willie Nelson during a joint tour of historic ballparks in the Summer of 2004). Changing her last name to James (James being derived from her middle name), Elana began performing in late 2005 with Beau Sample (formerly of Cave Catt Sammy) and Luke Hill (formerly of Paris 49), first under the name Elana James and Her Hot Hot Trio, and later as Elana James & the Continental Two. It was announced that Whit Smith would sit in with James when she toured opening for Bob Dylan on a series of shows in the summer of 2006, again performing at historic ballparks. Smith and James resumed playing together full time in 2006.
By early 2008 the trio had officially re-formed. In August 2008 the Hot Club of Cowtown released The Best of the Hot Club of Cowtown (Shout! Factory), followed in August 2009 by "Wishful Thinking" (Gold Strike Records/Thirty Tigers). It continues to tour worldwide.
Festivals where the Hot Club of Cowtown has appeared include: The Women in Jazz series (part of Jazz at Lincoln Center), the Cambridge Folk Festival (UK), the Glastonbury Festival (UK), the Fuji Rock Festival (JAPAN), Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival (AU), the National Folk Festival (US and AU), the Stagecoach Festival, the Winnipeg Folk Festival (CA), Waiting for Waits Festival (SP).
Other career highlights: The grand opening of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN, the Barns at Wolftrap, the Rochester Jazz Festival, the Strawberry Festival, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, US State Department Musical Ambassadors to Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame (inducted 2004), Tours with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, the Mavericks.
The band has been featured on television on Later With Jools Holland and the Jools Holland New Year’s Eve Hootenanny (UK), $40 a Day with Rachael Ray (US), The Grand Ol’ Opry Live (US), BBC Live From Glastonbury broadcast (UK), Good Morning Azerbaijan. Film credits for songs include indie films "Four Dead Batteries" and "In Search of a Midnight Kiss." United States radio appearances include Mountain Stage, Etown, World Cafe, A Prairie Home Companion, All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Sirius Sattelite, XM Sattelite.
There are a few festivals which the Hot Club of Cowtown has never played, but fervently wishes to. These include, but are not limited to: The San Francisco Jazz Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Merlefest, Bonaroo, the Austin City Limits Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
