Fuel was originally formed in 1989 in Kenton, Tennessee by guitarist/songwriter Carl Bell and drummer Jody Abbott. Singer/guitarist Brett Scallions joined the group after Carl Bell and Bassist Jeff Abercrombie saw him in a bar in Jackson, Tennessee in 1993. That same year, keyboardist/vocalist Erik Avakian joined the lineup.
The band's original name was Small the Joy. In 1994, the band moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and continued to play at local clubs building up their fan base.
The band released their first EP as Small the Joy in 1994, then changed the band's name to Fuel and self-released Porcelain in 1996, which sold 10,000 copies locally. They got decent air-play of their first hit Shimmer from the local radio stations, and attracted the attention of Sony/550 Imprint and were signed to the label.
Fuel released their second EP Hazelton in 1997, and then their first full-length debut Sunburn in 1998. Sunburn went platinum with the hits Shimmer, Sunburn, Bittersweet and Jesus or a Gun. Something Like Human was released in 2000 and was awarded multi-platinum status producing such hits as Bad Day, Innocent, Last Time and Hemorrhage. Fuel's greatest hits was released 2005.
After drummer Kevin Miller was released from the band in 2004 and lead singer Brett Scallions left in 2006, Carl and Jeff regrouped and found a new lead singer in Toryn Green, and new drummer with the addition of Tommy Stewart, formerly of Godsmack. With new band members in tow, Fuel went back into the studio in 2006 to record their fourth record Angels and Devils, which was released in August of 2007, and has produced the hits Wasted Time and Gone, and Leave The Memories Alone.
On April 8, 2010, the reformation of Fuel was finally confirmed in an official press release. Also the Fuel MySpace and Facebook were updated with the new line-up and tour dates. The new band website is www.fuelrocks.com. Fuel entered the studio on March 8, 2012 to record their fifth full length studio album titled Puppet Strings.
It was announced through Guitar World on December 5, 2013 that the album indeed titled, Puppet Strings, will be released March 4, 2014. The song, "Yeah!" was released for free download on the website as well, although it was believed to be the first single, Scallions stated that it is not the first single, but rather a "teaser." The first single, "Soul To Preach To" was released late January, 2014.
